Coronavirus Testing

Here’s what you should know about COVID-19 testing.

It seems like every news channel or online news source is talking about coronavirus testing. You may be wondering whether it’s appropriate for you or your family to get tested. Our Valley Stream, NY, doctor Dr. Stacy Hausmann does offer coronavirus testing. Here’s what you should know about COVID-19 and the three types of coronavirus testing we offer,

How soon do symptoms appear after exposure to COVID-19?

Most people start to show symptoms of COVID-19 anywhere from 2-14 days after being exposed to the virus.

Should I get tested?

You may need to get tested for  coronavirus testing at our Valley Stream, NY, office (private outside area) if,

  • You have symptoms of COVID-19
  • You have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19
  • You live with someone who is at a high risk for severe illness due to COVID-19 or at a high risk for COVID 19-related complications
  • You are about to travel somewhere that requires appropriate testing prior to flying
  • You have returned to NY from travel. Testing is done according to the NY State travel guidelines for testing
  • You will be having an upcoming medical procedure or surgery

I think I might have COVID-19. What kind of test should I get?

If you are concerned that you might have COVID-19 our team may recommend one of two coronavirus tests,

  • Molecular PCR Nasal Swab: a nasal swab that is sent to a laboratory and results are typically available within a few days.
  • Rapid Antigen test: another nasal swab test that can provide you with results in 15 minutes.  If the rapid antigen test is negative it is recommended to follow up with a Molecular PCR nasal swab.

If you are concerned about an active infection or have been exposed, Dr. Hausmann recommends getting tested for COVID-19.

I think I’ve already had COVID-19. Is there a test to check?

If you suspect that you’ve already been infected, you can talk with our doctor about getting an antibody test. By performing a simple blood draw, we can look for antibodies within the body that show that you have been infected with coronavirus in the past. This will not show the presence of an active infection. Most patients can get their results within a couple of days.
